This Weak in SEO - 10/19/07

Okay, so Adam’s not here today. I don’t know where he is. I think he’s selling sand bags to Egyptians or something, I dunno. He’s an idiot. Who cares what he’s doing?

But he asked me to do some posting on SEO-related topic. I didn’t know what to write about, so I figured I should just steal some guy named Steven Bradley’s idea and post about This Weak in SEO. But unlike Steven, I’m only gonna post about stuff I make up, stuff that may or may not be true, and everyone else’s opinion. You know, like most SEOs.

I also figured I should say something on the site this week, since spammers seem to be in short supply over the last few days and I’m really really bored. The Northern Manitoba middleweight boxing scene is in decline, with a 50% drop in the number of eligible fighters (from 2 to 1, but I’m still only the #3 contender to the title). So I gotta do something. So yeah, here we go. This Weak in SEO.

So what’s on tap for This Weak in SEO? I dunno yet. I’ll figure that out when I write it. It’ll probably suck, though. Most SEO stuff does.

Advertiser is Mad

Anthony is upset because he’s getting spammed by blog publishers who know he buys advertising on blogs. In other news, my mom is mad at all the telemarketers who call because she’s stupid enough to pick up the phone and buy something every time.

Some Guy Pretends to Consider Not Blogging Anymore

Jim says he may not blog anymore because he’s run out of things to talk about. If he’d really run out of stuff to talk about, he wouldn’t consider not blogging…he would just stop. Nice try.

Publisher Loses PR, Gets Banned, Throws a Fit, Almost No One Notices

Chris is upset because he lost Google Toolbar PageRank and his Adsense account.

I’m sure the lack of real content in most categories and the zillion one-paragraph posts devoted to mattresses that all linked to different pages on the same dotcom had nothing to do with it, either.

Guy Wants SEO Advice on Content Thieves

In one of the few legitimate questions in the SEO world this week, Doug wants to know whether or not he’ll be hurt by spammer blogs linking to his site and using his RSS content on their blogs.

Peter says not to worry about it. Search engines are smarter than that. To show how smart they are, they didn’t even hire me and I have a fifth-grade education! They know what spammers are up to usually.

I Like Soup from a Can

This has nothing to do with SEO, and is totally irrelevant. But then again, irrelevant posts about stuff are cool, too. Like this one. I don’t care what Wikinomics says about it.

Get People to Comment on Your Blog

BlueJar.com tells you some things you can do to get blog commenters to comment on your blog. He’s also got a way cool logo. It gives me the urge to make spaghetti.

Useless Stuff on Useless TNX

Sha Money Maker posts about how great TNX, a new text link ad network that’s already on Google’s radar and will probably be the next scam to be busted and cause SEOs worldwide to be outraged for no good reason at all. Of course, this will have to be settled in the ring as Matt puts on the gloves and takes on the best boxer in the SEO community, which is probably some 98-pound weakling with a pocket protector, so a good time will be had by all.

Adam Lasnik Says Key to Guaranteed #1 Ranking is to Buy Off Google

This is one of those things that may or may not be true, and I’ve done all of the research (none) that most SEOs do to confirm such things, but Adam Lasnik’s uncle’s brother-in-law’s grandson’s cousin’s mother’s sister-in-law’s niece’s second cousin twice removed told me that. So I don’t have to research it. It’s true. Give ‘em a case of beer and you’ll be #1 in no time. Really.

So there you have it. This Weak in SEO. It sucked. I warned you. Time to go find some more spammers to write back to.

Thanks for the (no-follow) link. Nice to know someone somewhere is reading the blog.

Whilst I can appreciate this post was written with a satirical lilt in mind, I just wanted to point out a few things…

I didn’t throw a fit. I was just pointing out what had occurred to my readers.

No one noticed? You did. You posted on it. Someone else left a comment. Both within less than a day. I still average around 3000 uniques a month, which might seem like small fry to yourself, but I’m perfectly happy with it for now :)

The Google AdSense ban occurred almost 12 months ago. But don’t worry about researching first, as you’ve covered yourself with your explanations within the post ;=P

Lack of real content? Perhaps… But in MOST categories?? If you see a post under the categories of Personal, Aware Or Conspiracy Nut…, Books, Dasha&Kittens, Eating Out, Friends, In The Media, Kazakhstan, Language, PDA, Pictures or Videos, it should all be ‘real’ content. Anything that comes under the parent category of ‘interesting’ is a sponsored post. They all obviously have hyper linked keywords, but the content is original at least. Fair play on the observation of the mattress category. That and several others were originally setup to ensure my other (niche article) sites were noticed by the bots.

“had nothing to do with it, either.” - Absolutely agreed - the sort of posts you refer to were in place long BEFORE I went from a PR of 2 to 4 last April.

Anyway, hope your weekend goes well, and if you get a moment, could you ask this blog’s owner if he would consider installing a ’subscribe to comments’ style plugin?

    Thanks for the link love!

  3. Peter Patera Says:

You’re welcome, Mr., Mrs., Ms, or Miss Newt (whatever the case may be…I’m not sure how newt genderization works. I only remember beating up some guy named Newt in the sixth round after the ref said I was TKOed in the fourth. But that’s okay.)

Where was I? Oh yeah. Glad you enjoyed the link.

Chris: research is not an important part of SEO. Everyone knows that. Look at the guys who just make stuff up about it. SEO needs unfounded rumours. It’s the backbone of the industry (that, and white loafer lightener). Even I know that, and I’m not an SEO. I’m just a boxer.

Since the owner will be back tomorrow, could you please provide an example? I’m not really a web guy…I’m just, y’know, a boxer and stuff.

  4. Steven Bradley Says:

You’ll be hearing from my attorney about the title of this post.

Peter I also suspect you may have something to do with the mysterious disappearance of Adam. The local authorities have been notified and expect some serious questioning.

What have you done with Adam you madman?

  5. Peter Patera Says:

I didn’t do nothin’ with him! I don’t even know how to do that. I’m not a Mafia guy. I box. Everyone knows that there are no Mafia connections in boxing.

  6. Chris Merriman Says:

The plugin I use for readers to subscribe to further comments can be found at http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/subscribe-to-comments/

I’ve got no connection with the code other than a satisfied user :)

PS Your recent order for two large drums of sulphuric acid was duly noted by the local authorities… Best choose a new disposal method ;)
